Welcoming guests since 2004
Our History
Originally a 30-acre property with a partial apple orchard, Crestwood was “discovered” in 1948 by renowned architect Claus Moberg and his wife, Jean, after Claus became captivated by its sweeping 180-degree mountain views while visiting his in-laws nearby. After being told by owner Jack Garland, “You can’t afford it,” Claus persisted—and eventually purchased the land for the then top-dollar price of $750. The Moberg family transformed the property into both their dream home and creative workspace.
The original two-story home housed Claus’s architecture studio and Jean’s interior design studio downstairs, alongside spaces that today serve as our lobby and wine cellar, while the upstairs included the family’s bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, and living room—many of which have since evolved into the guest spaces visitors experience today. In the late 1970s, Claus and Jean designed an additional upper-level suite, built by their son Steve, complete with a private living area, mountain-facing studio space, and a “tree-house” deck that guests can still enjoy today as the Grandfather Suite.
More than just a home, Crestwood became a gathering place deeply connected to the High Country community and a playground for the Moberg boys, who spent their childhood exploring the woods, lifeguarding at Hound Ears, and causing a little trouble at the neighboring girls’ camp—now Yonahlossee.
Today, that legacy continues under new ownership, with a family deeply committed to thoughtfully restoring and investing in the property while preserving the history and character that make Crestwood so special. The current owner’s connection to Crestwood began years ago while working at the front desk during college, eventually growing into experience in nearly every role the property has to offer. That hands-on history created not only a deep understanding of the operation but also a genuine passion for restoring the property’s legacy while helping it reach its full potential.
Over the past several years, an incredible amount of time, energy, and investment has gone into revitalizing the resort, including a full renovation of the spa, upgrades to guest rooms throughout the property, the addition of a new fitness center, and extensive behind-the-scenes deferred maintenance and restoration projects focused on preserving the historic buildings while elevating the guest experience. The goal remains the same as it was nearly 80 years ago: to create a place deeply connected to the mountains, the community, and the people who gather here.

Our vision
We believe a mountain getaway should feel like coming home — unhurried, welcoming, and worlds away from the everyday. Our vision for Crestwood is simple: to honor the history of this place while creating space for new memories. Whether you're here for a quiet weekend, a milestone celebration, or a long-awaited reunion, we want every detail to invite you to slow down, settle in, and stay a while.
Our inspiration
Crestwood is inspired by the land it sits on and the family who built it. From the original stone fireplace in our lobby to the tree-top terrace one of the Moberg sons designed around the mountainside, this property was always made for gathering. We draw from that legacy in everything we do — pairing the warmth of a family home with the comfort of a true retreat, and letting the beauty of the Blue Ridge do the rest.
