Family Summer Retreat Became Elegant Country Inn

April 4th, 2008

(BLOWING ROCK, N.C.) - When Steve Moberg was a child, his family spent many memorable summers at their secluded estate on a mountain ridge just outside Blowing Rock. It was such a peaceful place, punctuated by a fabulous view of the mountains, that when the Florida resident got older, he dreamed of sharing his family treasure with others.

That dream became a reality in March of 2004 when Steve and his wife, Terry, opened the Inn at Crestwood. The inn is upscale, yet comfortable, just like the family retreat. "It went from a home on 30 acres to an inn with 34 rooms, four cottages and a spa," says Terry Moberg. "Steve wanted to open the house to the public so they could enjoy the setting and the view, like he did as a boy." So far the inn has been well-received, although the Mobergs haven't spent much time publicizing and marketing their jewel. "We haven't been rated yet. We wanted to work on the details and get some experience under our belt," says Terry. "But people seem to like the hominess and the comfortableness of it."

The highlight is the magnificent view from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining room. From there, guests have a panorama of Grandfather Mountain, Seven Devils and Beech Mountain. Terry says it is especially poignant in the fall and on winter nights when area ski resorts are lighted for night skiing. However, the view is only part of the experience. Each well-appointed guest room and cottage is individually decorated. Interior features include a lot of stone, dark wood and other natural earth tones. Fireplaces are prevalent in the lobby, library and select guest rooms.

The Mobergs also added a fitness center, sauna, stream room, whirlpool and tennis courts. The spa is popular, offering body treatments, facials, massages, manicures and pedicures. Guests receive breakfast with their room rate, as well as afternoon wine & cheese from 4-5 p.m. and nightly turndown service.

The inn's restaurant, which is open to the public, is called Dominic's Table, a nod to executive chef Dominic Geraghty, who has earned high marks for his menu of American food with a European flair.  "The food is just amazing," says Terry. "We are very fortunate to have him on staff."
