The history of Crestwood officially began in 1948 when local resident and renowned architect, Claus Moberg, spotted a 30 acre apple orchard from the home of his in-law’s on Popular Grove Rd. He was captivated by the properties unique 180 degree view, and naturally began imagining a mountain retreat for his family there.

Upon initially inquiring, the current owner insisted that Mr. Moberg could not afford the property. Thankfully, Jack Garland gave in, and eventually sold the land for what was then considered a very pretty penny. The deal of a lifetime was finally sealed, and for $25 an acre, the Moberg’s became the proud new owners of a place they would soon fill with priceless family memories.
Mr. Moberg’s aspirations for the property quickly became a reality, as he and his wife Jean eagerly designed and erected a home atop the highest crest on the land. The original structure was two stories high, and provided joint studios for Jean’s interior design work and Claus’ architecture. The upper level featured a master bedroom, covered porch, kitchen, living and dining rooms, and also included a bedroom for their four sons; Jack, Richard, Kent and Steven.
The estate became notorious for Jean’s lavish parties, and left guests lingering for just one more taste of southern hospitality. The boys roamed free with neighborhood friends, traipsing through the surrounding woods and terrorizing the all-girls camp next door. They indeed enjoyed a blissful childhood at Crestwood, and to this day, still revisit feelings of never wanting to leave.
A third floor was added to the home in the late 1970’s by the couple’s youngest son, Steve. The addition consisted of an entirely new grand master suite and tree top terrace, which is now available to our overnight guests as The Grandfather Suite.
Tragedy struck the Moberg Family in 1986 when their oldest son Jack, and Harvard Architecture Graduate, lost a year long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Barbara and two children, Sara Jean and Claus Christopher, who currently reside in Washington, DC.
Eldest son, Richard, lives in Philadelphia where he enjoys a fulfilling career in medical research. His daughter Julie lives in the Boston area. The couple’s third son, Kent, resides in Boone.
Before Claus passed away in 1994, youngest son, and Blowing Rock resident Steve, married his wife Terry on the Terrace at Crestwood. A fountain now marks the exact place where the two exchanged vows. And little did they know, they were setting a precedent for many more weddings to take place there in the years to come.
Jean continued to spend her summers entertaining friends and family at Crestwood after losing her husband of almost 50 years. Eventually made the difficult decision to put the estate back on the market in the year 2000.
Upon discovering his mother’s intent, Steve intervened and proposed an equally beneficial plan that would allow the Crestwood estate to stay in the Moberg family forever. She heartily agreed, and the concept of The Inn at Crestwood was born. It was also during this time that another birth would take place. Satchel Augustus, son of Steve and Terry Moberg, was born in March of 2000. And as his son grew, so did Steve’s plans for Crestwood.
Crestwood opened its doors to the public on March 19 of 2004 with the unveiling of Steve’s grand addition to the original structure, and now features The Inn, Spa, Dominic's Table Restaurant and The Dawg Star Bar & Grille. Steve’s addition to the home aimed to preserve the original character of his father’s vision while respectfully enhancing its modern potential.
Today, a younger generation of the Moberg family and their carefully selected staff strive to recreate the welcoming environment so many have come to expect while visiting the Crestwood Estate. Each framed piece of artwork, floor plan and rendering found along the hallways was either drawn by Claus himself or a member of The Moberg Group -paying homage to a remarkable gentleman who so boldly imagined such a perfect mountain retreat.
